Gifts of the Spirit: Free Printable
Most of you saw my post this past Sunday. You know, the one that got a lot of “likes.” Seriously though, I haven’t had that many likes on one of my statuses since Stella was born! For those of you who haven’t heard the story {and those who want to hear it again}…here ya go!
Sunday night Chris, bear and I took a friend out to dinner for his birthday. Before our meal Chris prayed aloud at our table for our meal and thanked the Lord for our time together. Stella is used to this, and we all love to hear her say, “Amen!” after her que: “in Jesus’ name…” Naturally, I turned to her to to watch her face light up as she closed the prayer. To my surprise, when I turned back toward my plate there was a young wife {late 20′s early 30′s…that’s still young right?!} and mother of 3 small girls who had placed cash in my lap saying, “This is for you!”
Me: ”What?! What for?!”
The sweet woman said, “No, I want you to have this. Whenever my husband and I see other people pray out in public we always try to pay for part of their meal. We are trying to raise our family as Christians in this society, and it blesses our family to see others pray. It encourages us that we aren’t the only Christians out there!”
Of course I started to cry, because her act of encouragement touched my heart so much! For those of you who know me well {or even if you’ve only known me for 30 minutes} know that I am very sensitive and will break out in tears at some point!
I’ll be honest, we were pretty much speechless for a few minutes just thinking about how amazing that was. I’ve always heard about paying for the car behind you at Starbucks or in the grocery check out, but this was really cool! I just kept thinking what a gift of encouragement this young woman possesses. Of course we didn’t use the money to pay for our meal, because I plan to bless someone else the same way she blessed us!
This young woman really had me thinking about the spiritual gift of encouragement. It is one of my love languages, and I love to receive it {but I wish I was more gifted in giving it!}
It brought me to Romans 12:3-8:
“For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. (Romans 12:3-8 NIV)
