Reversible Sun Head Cover Tutorial
We were heading out to the sprinkler park last week, and bear bear is not one for wearing hats for more than a couple minutes. I hate smearing sun screen all over her head just to make sure her scalp doesn’t get burnt, so I decided to whip up a little something to cover her head from the sun.
I found a couple of these head covers in a box of hand-me-downs that she actually will keep on her head. The only problem is they don’t go with her bathing suit at all, so I thought I would make one to match.

I decided to keep it plain and simple, since her bathing suit has a cute pattern, and I also just wanted to use some of the supplies I had on hand. I thought I’d share the tutorial with you to make your own, and I am sure you could find some fun fabrics to give it more pizazz!
What you will need:
2 – 12×12″ pieces of fabric {or 1 – 12×12″ piece of fabric folded in half diagonally}
2 pieces of 1/2″ ribbon each cut at 28″ in length each
1/4″ elastic 4″ long
iron on fabric interfacing or hot glue
coordinating thread
iron
Let’s get started:
Step 1. & 2.
Cut both of your fabric squares in half diagonally, so that you have two triangles {you will have two fabric triangles left over as scrap or to make an additional one}. If you want both sides to be the same color {or just want to conserve fabric} then fold your square in half diagonally. If you do it this way, I would cut a 3″ slit in the folded crease so that you can turn it inside out once the sides are sewn.
Step 3.
Lay your triangles with right sides facing each other {you can’t tell in the picture because both sides of my fabric look the same}, because once you sew the two shorter sides, you will turn it right side out.
Step 4.
Pin the shorter sides to get ready to sew.
Step 5.
Sew along both shorter sides with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Step 6.
Trim the corner, so it is easier to turn the corner inside out.
Step 7. & 8.
Turn it right side out, and iron the edges.

Step 9.
Get the longer {unsewn} side ready for the ribbon to be attached. Ribbon likes to shift while sewing, so I cut a 1/8″ wide strip of fabric interfacing to iron the ribbon on to hold it in place as I sewed the ribbon on. You could also use a little bit of hot glue, but I like the interfacing. If you are really careful, you could probably skip this step all together and go straight to sewing your ribbon to the fabric.
Step 10.
Line up your first piece of ribbon so that the fabric interfacing is right in the middle of the ribbon. You will sew along both edges of the ribbon, so you don’t need the interfacing to be that wide.
Step 11.
Turn your fabric to the other sides and adhere the second strip of fabric interfacing.
Step 12.
Do the same with the second piece of ribbon, making sure that the edges of the two pieces of ribbon line up for easier sewing.
Step 13.
Start by sewing the edges of the ribbon together at a 1/16″ seam allowance {basically sew right over the ribbon’s stitching on the edges}.
Step 14.
Do the same on the other edges of the ribbon, sewing through the fabric.
Step 15.
This is what it will look like.
Step 16.
Cut the ribbon excess to where it is only an inch from where the ribbon meets the base of the fabric.
Step 17.
Using a seam ripper or scissors, undo some of the stitches about 1/2 an inch and fold the sides in toward the inside.
Step 18.
Insert your elastic through the ribbon tube until it meets the fabric {about an inch} and then sew across the ribbon through the elastic an inch from the edge of the ribbon.
Step 19.
Sew again through the ribbon and elastic about an 1/8 of an inch from the ribbon edge, making sure to sew through the folded in part of the ribbon.
Step 20.
Insert the other end of the elastic into the other side of the ribbon tube, and repeat steps 18. & 19.
Voila!
